STATEMENT

I understand the use of video camera as a particular perception of space. I document time, picture, sound and movement in space. The camera enables me to discern actual dimensions, or spatial situations as they are perceived through the eyes of the subconscious. I am primarily interested in the experience of architectural space, which gives way to the registration of impressions. With the help of video I try to represent the turnabout between external perception and internal experience. I build the narration of my own experience by editing the footage of documented architectural space, or spatial situations. Sound plays an important role in this process. It is a messenger of information about the imaginary space and time of a past event. From the perspective of the viewer it is virtual, and at the same time defines his/her position in relation to reality.

By using the home video method to document architectural space, I create my own interpretation of a well-known, conventional architectural concept...

VIDEOGRAPHY: Art video

MTV FOR LA TOURETTE

This is a compilation of four short video films, made in the La Tourette Dominican monastery near Lyon, which was constructed in the early sixties according to the plans of Le Corbusier and with the participation of mathematician, musician, and composer Iannis Xenakis.

PERSPECTIVES EMOUVANTES
S-VHS, Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam 1996, 4' 18''
Author Apolonija Šušteršič
Music Iannis Xenakis

Through the clearly visible car window, which eliminates the simulation of the viewer's direct contact with the landscape in motion, we see a series of serene passing scenes of the countryside. The only disturbance in this idyll is the discordant music by Iannis Xenakis, simulating the intensity of infinite movement. The drive ends with the car stopping in front of its destination, and the music and picture fading out simultaneously.

MUSIC FOR WINDOWS I
S-VHS, Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam 1997, 2' 34''
Author Apolonija Šušteršič
Cast Kees van Zelst
Music Kees van Zelst

A static camera records a musician playing a special instrument - a glass wall. He is enclosed in the space behind the glass wall, while the camera is positioned outside the wall. The musician improvises various rhythms on different parts of the glass wall, following the scheme of geometric musical rules devised by Iannis Xenakis.

MUSIC FOR WINDOWS II
S-VHS, Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam 1996, 3' 26''
Author Apolonija Šušteršič
Cast Kees van Zelst
Music Kees van Zelst

A static camera presents a narrow angle of observation, a detail of space between the glass wall and a pillar. Here the camera records the happening from the inside. It presents a surface of concrete block elements and a fissure, through which we occasionally see the simultaneous movement of wooden sticks. The picture does not show the source of the sound, nor the type of instrument used by the invisible musician.

PRIVATE CORRIDOR - PUBLIC TOILETS
S-VHS, Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam & Forum Ljubljana 1997, 3' 30''
Author Apolonija Šušteršič
Music Kees van Zelst
Edit Apolonija Šušteršič & Rok Sieberer - Kuri

The title actually satirises everything seen on the screen, since the spaces exposed to view no longer maintain the clear distance between public and private as defined by architectural conventions. The video film aims to preserve the privacy of those observed, and thus it does not show people in the spaces presented. Movement and sight follow the line of windows at eye-level, which enables the viewer to concentrate either on the patio of a monastery or the sky. People are defined by the sound of footsteps (in the corridor), and by the sound of water (in the toilet); they only appear in the final scene, gathering in a public canteen at a usual time.

APOLONIJA D.O.O.

Apolonija d.o.o. is a production unit and a trademark. It presents, among other things, a compilation of two video films.

PRODUCTION OF DESIRE
U-matic, Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam 1997, 4' 15''
Author Apolonija Šušteršič
Cast Carina Dorada

The video clip relates handbags and shoes produced by world famous fashion companies (Armani, Gucci, etc.) to a brick of wax produced by Apolonija d.o.o. The material of the brick reveals the recycling procedure that characterises the entire artist's production. The video clip advertisement forms part of an installation placed in a prestigious shop.

DO IT YOURSELF
VHS, Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam 1997, 5' 30''
Author Apolonija Šušteršič
Cast Neda Cilinger, Evert Crols, Tadej Glažar, Lada Hršak, Branimir Medič, Pero Puljiz, Antonella Vitale

This video clip demonstration presents the use of a new commercial product, a recycled wax brick. Various professionals (referred to as architects at the end of the clip) demonstrate its usage through the process of building a wall. The video clip forms part of an installation of the same title.
